Life before Fear

Today I was thinking of all the times Maverick and I have gone out in public. He was very strong willed when he was a puppy. He used to give you a look and lay down if he didn't want to keep walking. If we were at PetSmart or Petco, he'd lay in the aisle and not move. He wanted to greet every woman, child, and dog. He's never been a fan of men but has learned to coexist with them. Maverick grew up going to a school and see all sorts of kids and adults. He loved watching the kids walk by and getting the occasional pet between the ears. All the students and staff loved seeing him romp and play. He loved all the attention.

Then one day everything changed. Maverick started reacting as if other dogs were going to hurt me or him. He stopped wanting attention from people outside the home. He didn't even want kids coming up and petting him. It felt like a light switch would flip on and off. One second, he was striving for attention, and the next he would hide or walk as far away to not be touched.

His switch flipped when he was 1.5 years old, and he will be 9 years old in August.
